so, today was the day. we've been promising the boy we'd take him to a fall festival of sorts. lo and behold his school sent home a brochure for the Ronald McDonald House Fall Children's Festival taking place this very weekend. it was settled. we'd head there today after the boy's nap.
things started off well. tickets were purchased. shoes were removed (and if you know the boy, you know this brought him immense joy). inflatable slides were slid. bouncy houses were bounced. ponies were ridden. firetrucks were climbed. pumpkins were decorated.
and then it happened.....the boy spotted the star wars "guys". immediate panic set in. and it wasn't just darth vader, although he was the very worst of all. it was every last one of them. including luke skywalker (and really, it wouldn't be fair to the boy if i didn't mention that the 40-something year old man dressed up as "luke" was a good 300 pounds, had adult acne, and a serious overbite...come to think of it, i was a little freaked out myself.)
there were tears. screams. hiding. even an attempt to flee the scene.
we couldn't continue on with the festival without the boy casting paranoid glances over his shoulder. i knew all hope was lost when i couldn't even distract him with the teeniest baby goat i'd ever seen in the petting zoo.
so, we headed toward the river, pockets still full of tickets, to escape the scary guys and clear our heads. it worked. my carefree, silly, adventurous boy was back. and i have the pictures to prove it.
needless to say, we'll be holding off on all things star wars for at least a few more years. i always knew there were repercussions for grown men playing dress-up...
